How do I build a strong employer brand without a big budget?

Your employer brand is the sum of every interaction people have with you as an employer, so the cheapest way to strengthen it is to fix those interactions. Respond to every applicant, move quickly, give useful feedback and make sure your EVP is true in practice. Paid campaigns amplify a brand; they can't fix a poor experience.

Why is candidate experience the fastest brand win?
Because most employers are getting it wrong. In Indeed's 2025 survey with YouGov, nearly 9 in 10 Australian job seekers said they had applied for a job and never heard back. Those candidates don't complain to you; they tell friends, colleagues and review sites.

And employers pay for it. In Robert Half research from late 2025, 88% of Australian employers said they had lost at least one candidate in the past year, with many citing competing offers and counteroffers. Slow, silent processes make that more likely.

Scenario "We don't have a marketing budget for employer brand"
Tom (illustrative) is People and Culture Manager at a 400-person healthcare and community services organisation. Applications have risen as the market has softened, but the two-person HR team can't respond to them all. Glassdoor reviews mention "applied and never heard anything". Leadership asks for an employer brand campaign; there's no budget.

Tom doesn't need a campaign first. He needs to stop the damage: automated acknowledgements, clear timeframes, a simple rejection template and two-line feedback for interviewed candidates. Then he can capture real employee stories for his careers page at almost no cost.

How do I build an employer brand on a small budget?

  1. Respond to every applicant. Automated acknowledgements and outcome messages cost nothing once configured.

  2. Set and meet timeframes. Tell candidates when they'll hear back, and keep that promise.

  3. Give feedback after interviews. Two specific sentences are enough to leave a positive impression.

  4. Make sure your EVP is true. Test your claims with current employees. Brand built on promises you don't keep unravels at onboarding.

  5. Use your own people. Short employee stories, photos and videos are more credible than stock imagery and polished copy.

  6. Equip hiring managers. They are your brand in the interview room. Brief them on your EVP and how to sell it honestly.

  7. Measure it. Track candidate satisfaction, offer acceptance, decline reasons and review sentiment.

How does employer brand connect to build, buy or borrow?

A strong brand makes "buy" cheaper, because more of the right people apply and accept. It also supports "build", because employees who believe in the brand stay and grow, and "borrow", because contractors who've had a good experience come back.
